In this episode of Movies To Watch Before You Die, Mark is joined by guest Dan Helbling as the two break down the 2008 film There Will Be Blood. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano.
Set in the uncivilized American West in the early 1900s, There Will Be Blood chronicles the life of a tenacious silver miner turned oil magnate Daniel Plainview. After striking oil in the small town of Little Boston, Daniel goes toe-to-toe with a local evangelical preacher as the two struggle to vie for control over the susceptible townspeople.
In this episode, the guys talk about a bunch of ideas including Nietzschean philosophical concepts such as Will to Power, Superman, God is Dead, and Slave Morality, as well as cinematic themes like family, capitalism, religion, and morality. Mark makes a case for the film’s parallels to the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Dan talks about the importance of familial relationships. Tune in to see why.
Did you also know that There Will Be Blood is loosely based on the 1926 novel Oil! by Upton Sinclair? The book establishes the initial premise of the film and then continues on to explore additional themes such as socialism and war. Get it for yourself on Amazon or iTunes.
